Who Is Singing ‘Your’ Anthem?
From: Editor@sambe.org
Every generation identifies with an anthem of love or politics. “Unchained Melody” is a prom favorite. Every season of social change brings forth an anthem such as “We Shall Over Come”, “Times They Are A Changin’”, “American Pie”, “Let It Be” and others. It is evident, just by the titles, that these ‘anthems’ are not representative of all races or ethnic backgrounds. That is why we pose the question “Who is singing your anthem”? In these tumultuous times there is only ONE thing that will cross the many divisions that have appeared across OUR planet and that is MUSIC. From Australia to Kamchatka, Iceland to India, the many countries that make up the European and African communities, to South and North America, music is being written, performed and appreciated. So, we ask you to reach out and listen, appreciate, contemplate and remember. In 5, 15, 50 years, which piece of music will have made the most impact on your life? Which song or piece of music will be ‘YOUR’ Anthem. Send ‘your’ Anthem to Editor@sambe.org. Over the next several months we will compile the list in alphabetical order and publish our findings before December 31, 2009. 05/28/09

‘Live From SugarHill’ Airs Thursday, July 2, 7:00pm CST
Episode VI features Andrew Karnavas and Freddy Steady 5
From: Gina Miller

Houston — ‘Live From SugarHill’s July episode will feature solo artist Andrew Karnavas and 60s garage rock legends The Freddy Steady 5. The hour-long program includes short sets by each guest and candid interviews with Rosa Guerrero (KTRU’s Mutant Hardcore show) and award-winning record producer, Dan Workman. Community guest and ‘audience of one’ for Episode VI is Chris Gray, music editor for The Houston Press, a weekly publication with almost 645,000 readers and more than 2 million online hits each month. ‘Live From SugarHill - Episode VI’ airs on July 2, at 7:00pm CST. This episode also brings in a new web-host and audio stream partner, OutboundMusic.com.

Andrew Karnavas acoustic melodies are a blend of straight forward chord progressions and slow finger picking that combine elements of blues and folk. The songs are largely introspective, image-driven stories that seek to make listeners examine a man’s relationships and his opinions in both pastoral and urban settings. In July 2009,Andrew will release ‘The Bridge’, a ten-song Blues Rock and Americana LP from his band Runaway Sun, and this fall, ‘Film Noir’, a thirteen-song solo debut with acoustic guitar, cello, piano and violin arrangements.

The Freddy Steady 5 is classified as Tex-Pop; a package of jangly, Beatlesque pop with a Texas touch. Texas Music Hall-of-Famer Freddie Krc (rhymes with search) has played drums behind renowned singer/songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker and Roky Erickson; and been in the studio with Carole King, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, and the Small Faces’ Ronnie Lane. All along, he has also been out front on his own projects and produces Jenny Wolfe and the Pack.

Zenfilm is a nationally recognized film production company and HD post boutique based in Houston, Texas. The creation of long time producer/director team Merideth Melville and W. Ross Wells, Zen has experienced exponential growth and received numerous awards since founding in 2005. Zen works with agencies and record labels to create national TV commercials, music videos and viral media. They also develop and maintain sustainable social marketing initiatives.

Founded in 2001, OutboundMusic.com is an Internet radio and music retailer whose goal is to promote music produced by independent recording artists. They currently promote nearly 700 artists, both Texas based acts and many international talents.

The partnership between Zenfilm, Outbound Music and SugarHill Recording Studios launched its first episode in 2008. Since then, it’s received over 3,500 unique views. About SugarHill Recording Studios
The oldest continually operating recording studio in Texas is nestled in a southeast Houston neighborhood that over time has been home to legendary producers, record labels, and artists who’ve produced some of the most historically important and widely recognized musical recordings. Beginning the legacy in 1946, musician Harry Choates, with producer Bill Quinn, laid tracks for the Cajun classic “Jole Blon” for Gold Star Records. Blues icon Lightnin’ Hopkins recorded soon thereafter. In the 1950’s the studio hosted Pappy Dailey’s D label, George Jones cut “Why Baby Why?” and the Big Bopper recorded “Chantilly Lace.” Willie Nelson, Bobby Bland and Arnett Cobb recorded sessions. In 1960s, the Sir Douglas Quintet tracked “She’s About a Mover.” The mid-1970s introduced Crazy Cajun producer Huey P. Meaux and his work with Freddy Fender and Clifton Chenier. Since the 1980s, SugarHill has hosted Tejano artist Little Joe, country great Johnny Bush, and urban powerhouse Beyoncé.

Latin Alternative Music Conference
Tue~Sat, July 7~11, New York City, New York
The 10th Annual LAMC returns to New York City July 2009. As in past years, LAMC features panels and exhibitions, concerts, parties and art highlighting the best of Latin Alternative. A one-of-a-kind event! LAMC is the only major conference geared towards the marketing of Spanish-language alternative music - the voice of today’s Latinos. This four-day event providing networking opportunities with the genre’s leading artists, label executives, journalists, managers, retailers and programmers, is the most extensive gathering of Latinos in entertainment to be offered by a music conference to date. The ninth annual LAMC in 2008 saw 1,250 industry leaders converge on the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City to participate in industry panels, exhibitions, press conferences, and networking. Over 30,000 music lovers and industry insiders attended LAMC concerts, parties and art exhibits, at great venues in New York and Los Angeles.

LAMC offers invaluable opportunities to reach 30,000+ Latino consumers. As well as industry tastemakers and trendsetters through its various concerts and parties. Voting For TMC “Artist Of The Year” ENDS Oct. 9
Finalists: Katherine Dawn, Laura Marie and The Lavens
The nomination votes have been counted and the three finalists for 2009 TMC ‘Artist of the Year’ are (in alphabetical order): Katherine Dawn, Laura Marie and The Lavens – all exceptional talents and longtime TMC members/supporters as well! (It’s gonna be tough narrowing it down to just one winner!) Other TMC nominees for the honor included (again, alphabetically): Alan Fisher, Ashlee Rose, Eric Friedland, Maestro Aurora, Maria Larson, Patrice Villastrigo and Paul “Red” Dvorak.

Tallying the nominations were members of the TMC ‘Artist of the Year’ committee, headed by 2nd Vice President Joe Wolf, which also included 1st Vice President Carol Sowa and last year’s Artist of the Year winners, The Tim & Bob Show (Don & Mary Lou Hymel and Steven & Kathy Feinstein). The committee met June 5 at Orderup in the Colonnade to count and verify the nominee ballots to come up with the top three vote getters as finalists for this year’s honor.

To learn more about our 2009 finalists, here are their web-sites:

The LavensWeb-site: http://www.thelavens.com Web-site: http://www.myspace.com/thelavens Web-site: http://www.sonicbids.com/thelavens
All of these talented TMC members were nominated by fellow members whose dues were current, with ballots mailed to members in their April TMC newsletter, The Coalition Chronicle, and also available at the April and May TMC events. Ballots with the finalists’ names will be available at the upcoming TMC July 21 panel, the Aug. 18 panel, the Sept. 19 Birthday Party/Showcase, and the Oct. 6 Texas Music Month panel. Voting ENDS Oct. 9. (Remember, you must be a member current on dues to vote!) On a side note, the Artist of the Year committee was delighted to run into TMC member Tara Kalyn Norman, who was performing at Orderup the night of the committee meeting there!

Renowned Audio Facility Launches “Independent” Mastering Giveaway
From: Logan Bosemer
Over $30K In Audio Mastering Packages Will Be Given To Six Independent Music Artists By Random Drawing
Nashville – In 2001, Eric Conn and partner Don Cobb opened Independent Mastering in Nashville and, over the past eight years, have brought their studio to the forefront as a worldwide industry leader in audio post and CD mastering. The halls of Independent Mastering are lined with Gold and Platinum albums that read like a who’s who of popular music from Garth Brooks to Quincy Jones, Jimmie Buffett to Waylon Jennings, and a few modestly placed Grammy winners throughout including John Prine’s Fair and Square and Tim O’Brien’s Fiddler’s Green.

To celebrate Independent’s successful eight-year run, they want to give back to the music community in the form of mastering giveaways to randomly selected independent artists from all over the world, one per month to be more specific. Independent’s Mastering Giveaway will begin with the first drawing on July 31st and one drawing every month after that, through December 31st, for a total of six mastering packages worth a hefty $30K. And why would they do all of this? Conn says, “We’ve had a lot of support from our worldwide clients over the years, some of whom we’ve never even met thanks to Internet FTP & FedEx. We felt it was time to give a little back to the community” Winners will be announced at the beginning of every month starting in August. For more information and rules Enter The Giveaway.

2009 is off to a fantastic start with three John Waite album projects as well as three Jack White (The Raconteurs, White Stripes) and two Cage The Elephant singles. Also in the studio this year, Ray Benson, finishing Willie And The Wheel featuring Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel (co produced by the late Jerry Wexler) and Nickel Creek’s Sarah Watkins with producer John Paul Jones, of Led Zeppelin fame, wrapping her solo debut on Nonesuch Records. Independent is also kicking it into overdrive with the addition of a “B” room due to roll out in May. “We currently have three Sonic Solutions/SonicStudio workstations and one SADiE workstation on line all day, every day, in “A” room and a small editing room, but we can’t handle the foot traffic. Adding a second suite will allow us to better streamline the workflow and have more room for attended sessions” says Conn. Independent Mastering may be based in the Country Music capital, but their eclectic discography includes a variety of record labels, producers, artists, and engineers from around the world and within all genres of music.

KEDA – 1540AM “Jalapeno Radio”
March 17, 2010 – 44th Anniversary
“The ‘experts’ said when we started on March 17th, 1966 this ‘cantina music playing radio station’ wouldn’t last 3 months”
– Richard Davila
09/08/05

KEDA 1540AM, Radio Jalapeno, as been listening to the community since 1966. On March 18, 2010, Radio Jalapeno will celebrate its 44th Anniversary. As a community oriented radio station, KEDA is an anomaly in the world of broadcasting, where growth is determined by the size of the merger. A local station in every sense of the word, KEDA listens to the listeners. No computer generated play list here. A singular feature of KEDA is the Jalapeno Jukebox which takes requests from 12:00noon till 1:00pm. More than once, listeners have requested a song in an attempted to stump the DJ, only to be surprised by the expanse of the record bin. Manual Gonzales Davila believed in the words that are on every FCC license where it says “in service to the community. His efforts, continued by his son Ricardo have made KEDA “Jalapeno Radio” a “parte de tu familia”, part of the family for generations of San Antonio families. Bilingual Conjunto and more where the listener is always heard.

KEDA – Radio Jalapeno
510 S. Flores San Antonio, Texas 78204
Ph: 210-226-5254 Fax: 210-227-7937

How does listening KEDA affect your life?

“It makes me think of my grandparents…” Mike M. <> “Chinga Chinga music that makes you want to dance.”…Joe V.
“It remind me of the times I spent with my dad.”…Elsa D.

Many artists/musicians that are now “making it” always thank KEDA for giving them the opportunity to play their music when they were “unknowns”. That’s something that KEDA is known for - “They make the hits, not PLAY the hits” …Chayo Z.
