Halfway Legal promoting their debut album Milestones while hitting the best venues in San Antonio
featuring:
Jaik Yanez Bass and lead vocals <> David Work Guitar and backing vocals <> Steven Work Drums and backing vocals
After a long hiatus, Halfway Legal is back on the San Antonio streets providing hard hitting rock originals mixed with a wide variety of covers from the classics to the latest chart toppers. Featured in their show are songs from their debut album Milestones, recorded at Frog Leg Studios. Milestones takes the listener through the trials and tribulations of life, from Party at Bobs a tale of a wild night at a magical party, to For Me and My Friends, a song outlining unbridled youth and a fond memory of days past. Milestones delivers a mental travel through the complexities of common experiences. With their musical roots grounded firmly in classic rock, the members of Halfway Legal deliver an album that will stand the test of time, eclectic yet pointed.
· David Work says, When we put this album together, we wrote about our lives experiences. It came together so easy. The great thing is that when someone hears our music, they swear that we wrote the songs about them. Jaik Yanez agrees. We put together a collection of encounters and events. The lyrics speak to peoples emotions; they have connection. Steven Work added, We learned a lot through our debut album. Its gratifying to see the hard work pay off. Milestones will be available to buy at Halfway Legal shows. Their album can also be purchased on I-Tunes and Rhapsody.
Look for Halfway Legal at the upcoming events!

The volatile energy and the alluring nature of Goodnight Goddess invokes slacked jaws and exclamations of wonder, in part due to lead vocalist/crooner/screamer, M. Kolbs androgynous nature. This Austin quintet transitions in seconds from the frailty of Bright Eyes to the frenzied aggression of S.O.A.D. Be prepared for a live show promising flailing limbs and gyrating hips, plus melodies you can sing along to. Goodnight Goddess has the middle slot opening for Third Eye, a live tribute to Tool, with an uncomprimising Nancy Silva Project opening the show!

Kidcrash and Denovali Records Launch FREE Download Page
From: Beatwire.com
Santa Fe Kidcrash, 9 years old and growing, and Denovali Records launched a FREE Download Page of the bands entire discography. Kidcrash, frustrated with the lack of discourse about the role digital media sales play in the d.i.y. community and flumoxed by the lack of like-minded bands willing to challenge the old model, believes more artists need to start discovering how to negotiate the changing landscape of what it means to be an independent artist. Confident that their live performances offer the most honest representation of their music, Kidcrash has put in motion, a shift in the way they want to see their listeners consume music. By allowing their music to be downloaded for FREE, they are relying heavily on donations/door money and merchandise sales at shows. The goal is to provide a source of sustaining revenue in order to continue touring, recording, and releasing new material.
On June 28, 2008 a blog appeared on the Santa Fe/Olympia based band Kidcrashs Myspace profile titled FREE Kidcrash mp3 Page Is Up. The first line was a link, Web-site: http://www.denovali.com/kidcrash, followed by strong criticism of the practice of music download/social networking and profiteering on Myspace and outrageous payouts to iTunes for offering a service more laughable than the common practice of selling a private interest selling a community back their own water or resources.
Everything is now FREE. You can stream selected Kidcrash songs or download all Kidcrash releases. You may donate something if you want to help the band continue to release new music and tour. Even a $5.00 donation is a big help. But obviously, our music is and must be available to anyone who wants it regardless of the ability or desire to make a donation, knowing as artists that in the process of creating, we produce works that by definition are the property of society, not the artist. What theyre doing by offering free digital releases is essentially opting to forgo selling their music through third parties, and more importantly rendering any digital copy of any and all work from their discography completely valueless. Ultimately this should prove to reduce the cost to the consumer and increases the revenue of the artist making sustainability as independent touring artists more achievable than ever before.
Kidcrash is not alone in their qualms with the way records are released to the public and specific music is circulated. Their gesture is in many ways a significant departure from the critical-but-inactive stance. That is, they do not presume to ultimately benefit from material record sales, instead relying on the spirit of DIY independence and the gift of a supportive community. While some artists might argue that iTunes offers a solution to the issues originally created by the explosion of Napster, iTunes isnt capable of just stopping copyright infringement issues for artists by waiving their magic wand. So far, unable to get their first official release removed from the iTunes store and Amazon mp3 service (despite the fact that their former label does not have the digital distribution rights) Kidcrash asks consumers NOT to buy this record.
Additional Quotes:
While the consumer assumes that by purchasing the downloads they are doing the right and honest thing and supporting the artist, in reality, often the artist receives little or nothing, and plenty of times its because someone is selling their music without their permission. Only the label and service profit. Monopolies are against the law, and bands selling their music on iTunes have no artistic ethics as far as I am concerned. Ever bit of money they siphon through iTunes goes to further weaken we the artists ability to compete, destined to end up with no choice left but to suckle at the teat of corporate greed to have any chance of being able to afford to live our lives as musicians. iTunes supporters are making it harder and harder to retain any power, any say, about the completely unreasonable practices of the Wal-Mart of the online music industry, said drummer Buster Ross, clearly a little bent out of shape from dealing with a lack of responsibility and respect, even basic decency when working to disassociate the band from something they have wanted a part in.
It would be so incredible if we could raise enough money through donations. Bassist Kevin Brouse told Ross. Right now we need to come up with a ton of money for plane tickets to tour southeast Asia, Australia, and Japan in early 2009. Any donation will lighten the load, but if we dont raise it, maybe the travel agent will let us pay partially in d.i.y. ethics cred, doubtful.
Maybe its actually not punk to help sell mp3s to your friends and fans through corporate third party services that are toxic to any sense or notion of community, of taking it back for ourselves. If every band with a back bone just flooded the web with artist approved free digital versions of their records, slow and steady, we could hurt the megoliaths to the point that they couldnt get away with all of this bullshit, because there could be a million great bands offering the same service at a price that no business can compete with, whatever you can afford or think is right. After all, who doesnt download music illegally?
Kidcrash is available to answer general questions, set up interviews, provide press pictures, and be involved in the rethinking of how this generation of independent artists will face the challenges that lie ahead.

Ahmad Nadimi Peace Through Music
From: Beatwire.com
Plenty of musicians have claimed they have captured the concept of peace in their music. Now heres one who goes that bit further. French-Iranian composer Ahmad Nadimis album Suite for Peace is a whole dissertation on the quest for peace. It is the culmination of a life-long voyage of discovery for this renaissance man that began almost 60 years ago. Nadimis first love was the trumpet. He graduated from the Tehran Conservatoire of Music, and his skills on the horn soon led him to the famous Versailles Conservatoire in France under Roger Delmotte. It was here that his amazing talent for all types of music started to flourish. He traveled to various countries including India, Nepal, and Africa. He studied different musical cultures and the relationship between music and mans internal quest. Nadimi experimented with classical, jazz and contemporary music in a variety of bands before finding his true calling in the music he presents on this album classical new age. He became adept at composing for synthesizers and sampling the human voice to bring ancient and modern sounds together in a musical collage inspired by divine love and the purity of nature. Each piece on Suite for Peace is a different musical expression of the harmony that exists between man and nature, creation and the creator.
This is music truly made to build bridges and to heal the divisions which threaten mankind. It is Nadimis labour of love and his quest to find the deeper meaning of music in mans soul. On a simpler level, this is an album that brings a message of peace and of hope. But it is a message that was not so simple to create. First, Nadimi travelled to Bratislava, Slovakia to record with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Then, he spent a week in an airport recording children from all over the world saying peace in their own language. And finally, he spent four months in a studio, recording and editing different ethnic instrument from around the world, mezzo soprano Emiko Nadimi, Childrens Chorus of Washington, synthesizer, sounds effects and transforming these raw materials into a truly beautiful work of art. Nadimis music is transcendental in the true meaning of the world. In removing the listener from the trials of the world with its classical ethereal structure, Nadimi is reminding us that, beneath all our differences, we are truly one people.
Nadimi has played his beautiful, inspiring brand of music all over the United States for nearly two decades. He hopes to present his work with the Miami Symphony Orchestra along with the presentation of his CD on September 10th in Washington D.C. It would be the culmination of an amazing journey.
Suite for Peace is available to buy now at Web-site: http://www.suiteforpeace.com.

Critics Agree, She Got Me There has punch!
From: Essential Broadcast Media
Darren Kozelskys New Single She Got Me There is Making Even the Most Astute Critics Bow
Nashville Dallas native, Darren Kozelsky is staying busy opening for acts such as Jason Aldean, Wade Bowen, Josh Turner, and Cross Canadian Ragweed, but in addition to the 125 dates on the books this year, Darren is making stops at radio in support of his new single, She Got Me There. Music Row magazines acclaimed critic, Robert Oermann, calls the track a Splendid work all around. In addition, the reviewer raves, The young-love lyric is packed with cool details that put you right in the scene. His vocal has power and sincerity. And the rocking track is produced with lots of crunch and punch. Oermann finishes by encouraging radio to simply play this.
She Got Me There, produced by JR Rodriguez and Phil ODonnell (Craig Morgan) and written by Phil ODonnell, Joe Leathers, and Kyle Jacobs, is impacting radio now. When I first heard this song, I immediately felt a connection with it. It describes my feelings when I first met my wife perfectly, says Darren. I think plenty of other people will relate to those same strong feelings as well. The song describes how great it is to have that special someone to share your life with.
Darrens debut album, Let Your Mind Fly, was released in 2006 and featured the track Cool Grass and Running Kind, a Merle Haggard hit, on the record. To date, Darren has had two Top 10 hits, Cool Grass and Mind Over Matter, on the Texas Charts, however word of his energetic live show has spread and now the 2008 tour has expanded to include tour dates internationally--including a trip to Europe where the band will visit France and Italy entertaining the troops stationed overseas.

Flower Records Hindu Kush Strikes Controversy with Blood for Oil
From: Beatwire.com
Flower Records is proud to announce the signing of rock band Hindu Kush with the release of their new single and music video Blood For Oil, produced by renowned producer Greg Penny(Elton John, k.d. lang). The slow strum of Pablo Esquers guitar mirrors the melodically uncanny voice of lead singer Eli Behar to introduce Hindu Kushs new release, Blood for Oil, a politically charged melancholic elegy to the war in Iraq. After rating above Wyclef Jean and The Eagles to garner a second place spot in The Huffington Posts review of the Top Five Buzzworthy Green Musicians, the band, now less than two years running, feels ready to make their world debut. Blood For Oil sets the group up for its first step into the spotlight, but not its most definitive one says Behar.
The eighteen-year-old lead singer thinks that the band is finally discovering its sound which he says looks very different than the new single. Still, despite what the group sees as a departure in this new track, Blood for Oil shows a musical maturity thats rare to find in bands this young. This will probably be Hindu Kushs only political song says Behar, but who can blame them. The song in a little more than five minutes sums up the fears and sorrows of life under the guise of a deceptive administration and a horrifying six-year war.
The predominantly black and white music video, released with the Blood for Oil single, portrays the band members recording the song in the studio. Sporadic crimson splotches interrupt the mute atmosphere of the recording session and prepare the viewer for a thought provoking experience.
As Eli Behars voice sways to the steady drum and acoustic guitar, the video confronts the viewers conscience with images of an angry Uncle Sam, guilt ridden government officials, and the bloody collateral reality of war. Behar and his group never look at the camera, but still manage to point a heavy convicting finger at the viewer. The passionate lyrics challenge listeners to make a change and become more proactive citizens. This first and only political song for Hindu Kush captures the timeliness of its era in simple lyrics with powerful implications. The song ends with a physical manifestation of the bands message spelled out in big red lettering. The final caption Vote confronts the viewer with a new moral imperative and gives him/her a tangible way to create change.
Lead singer and guitarist Behar sees himself as the experimental element, and likens his riffs to bands like Black Sabbath with their darker heavier style. Bassist Nathaniel Woods becomes the counterweight Behars weighty sound with his pop-like bass lines, similar to those of sixties classic rock bands. The third member, Pablo Esquer, brings a unique accoutrement to the band with his violin, but makes an even greater impact with his classical music training. Behar believes Pablo has improved the bands melodic sound and made them a little more musically organized. The final member, drummer Logan Hugueny Clark with his exploratory drum style adds the last touch to the bands genius. Behar explains that this album will take the group in a new direction that will be different than before and better than anything Hindu Kush has done to date.

High Fuel Prices Put Brakes On Indie Band Tours
By Jason Dearen, Associated Press Writer
San Francisco - Steven Garcia pulled into a Houston gas station recently to fill up the old Dodge van his punk band uses on summer tours. For months, the 23-year-old singer-guitarist had been budgeting money and booking show dates for Something Fierces third tour but skyrocketing gas prices have put the brakes on those plans. Once I ran the numbers it was a Theres no (expletive) way kind of moment, Garcia said. After much hand-wringing and grumbling from bookers whod scheduled the band to play, Garcia canceled the tour.
If theyre not canceling their tours, small acts are banding together, stuffing themselves into smaller vehicles or cutting short their tours. We do have two bands, The Revisions and The Estranged, out on tour together right now who have decided to share a van to save on gas costs, said Ken Cheppaikode, who operates Dirtnap Records, a Portland, Ore. independent label and record shop. Cheppaikode said that after putting seven band members and their equipment into a van, they didnt have room for a roadie.
San Franciscos LoveLikeFire, a young band that counts on touring to make money and increase its fan base, now tries to get to the East Coast more often because the cities are closer to each other than out west. We often ask ourselves, is it worth driving so far when gas is almost $5 a gallon? said Ann Yu, the bands singer. We spend at least 150 bucks in gas to (get to) a show, when there is no guarantee that youll make any of it back. It does screw up a lot of bands on the West Coast, cause ... there are very few cities to play in under seven-hour stretches, which can be costly, Yu said.
The tough choices being made at the bottom of the music industry food chain are just one more hit to the business already reeling from declining album sales because of digital music. Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of Pollstar, a trade publication covering the concert business, said the cost of fuel is affecting all levels, but the people being most affected are new bands touring on the subsistence level. They dont have the popularity to charge higher ticket prices because of higher fuel costs. Weathering soaring prices for more famous bands sometimes means just cutting back. Like big acts using eight trucks instead of 12 this time around, Bongiovanni said. Larger bands can also ask clubs for guaranteed money to play, meaning even if no one comes to the show, theyll still get paid. And with the higher gas prices, theyre asking for more, said Romona Downey, who books bands at the Bottom of the Hill club in San Francisco, which is popular with midlevel touring bands.

Urban Campfires - June Newsletter
From: Urban Campfires
Hi everyone, Hows the summer treating you? I just got back from 17 glorious days at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Steve, did you make it all 18 days? Although Jayne was not terribly visible this year at the festival, there were rumored sitings of her dancing wildly in the mosh pit. You go, girl. Look for the Kerrville Rambles and pictures to be posted at the web site soon. (How soon? Soon as I get around to writing them.) In fact, I think well have song samples and a slide show of all things Kerrville at the my space site for a while too. Check both sites often for changes and updates. Coming soon.
We are ready to unveil our line up for next season. Heres the short version of what we have coming. Longer, more official previews will be posted on the web site as soon as Janet gets around to writing them and Steve gets around to posting them. Check back soon - but not too soon. (There seems to be a theme developing here.)
So, here goes... Urban Campfires 2008- 2009
Sept. 13 - Batdorf and Rodney (CA) Janet has been a devoted fan since the 70s. She and John even used a B & R song during their wedding nearly 30 years ago! When John Batdorfs name started to show up on house concert lists Janet pounced on it with both feet. What a great show to start the season. This is folk rock in the tradition of as Loggins and Messina, Seals and Crofts, Jackson Browne... all those guys we loved in the late 70s.
Oct. 11 - Buddy Mondlock (Nashville) Back by popular demand. Buddy is a favorite of long standing Urban Campfires regulars but he hasnt been around lately.
Too busy touring with Art Garfunkel and writing hit songs.
Nov. 1 - David Wilcox (NC) Honestly, we never thought wed see this name on our schedule. We have been trying for years.
The last time David played in SA, he was at the Majestic. Guitar, lyrics, stories... hes the whole package.
Dec. 6 - Were working on it. (Well let you know SOON)
Jan. 10 - Darden Smith w/ Will Taylor and Strings Attached (Austin) It doesnt get much better than a Darden Smith show
unless it is a Darden Smith show accompanied by a string section. This will be a very cool show.
Feb. 7 - Brooks Williams (MA) The return of another UC favorite. Brooks plays understated guitar pyrotechnics. He makes it look so effortless that you might miss it if youre not paying attention and mistake what you are hearing for two or more guitars. But wait! Its just Brooks - one guitar, one great voice, smart lyrics and a super warm performer.
March 7 - Claudia Nygaard (Nashville) Get ready to have your socks blown off by this newcomer to UC. Claudia writes great songs and
presents them with warmth and humor and a down home feel that will fit in perfectly at Urban Campfires.
April - Were working on the exact date but The Dalziels, Scott & Michelle, will be driving down from Maquoketa, Iowa (Yea. Say that 3 times fast.) for their UC debut. If you like husband/wife teams like Small Potatoes, The Dreamsicles, or Albert & Gage you will love The Dalziels. And baby stand back when Michelle straps on that djembe. A good time will be had by all.
May 9 - Siobhan Quinn and Michael Bowers (VA) played their very first public gig together at UC in March 2005. Since then, they have won many prestigious songwriting awards, taught workshops, recorded CDs, taught Janet how to make a better margarita, and written a slew of great songs. We are tickled pink to be able to celebrate Siobhans birthday with her that night.
So, thats it for now. We hope you have a great summer and we look forward to seeing everyone in September.
Please shoot us a quick email and let us know what youre up to this summer... cool trips, good music, festival blogs... Wed love to hear from you.
Oh, we have a DVD of a solo John Batdorf performance. If anyone is interested in seeing it before his show in September, let us know. Maybe we can work it like a chain letter... You watch it and then send it to the next person on the list? Reply to this note and let us know your snail mail address if youre interested.
So, big cyber hugs to all of you. Until the next newsletter, be well.
Janet, Jayne & Steve

KEDA 1540AM Jalapeno Radio
March 17, 2009 43th Anniversary
The experts said when we started on March 17th, 1966 this cantina music playing radio station wouldnt last 3 months
Richard Davila 09/08/05
KEDA 1540AM, Radio Jalapeno, as been listening to the community since 1966. On March 18, 2008, Radio Jalapeno will celebrate its 42th Anniversary. As a community oriented radio station, KEDA is an anomaly in the world of broadcasting, where growth is determined by the size of the merger. A local station in every sense of the word, KEDA listens to the listeners. No computer generated play list here. A singular feature of KEDA is the Jalapeno Jukebox which takes requests from 12:00noon till 1:00pm. More than once, listeners have requested a song in an attempted to stump the DJ, only to be surprised by the expanse of the record bin. Manual Gonzales Davila believed in the words that are on every FCC license where it says in service to the community. His efforts, continued by his son Ricardo have made KEDA Jalapeno Radio a parte de tu familia, part of the family for generations of San Antonio families. Bilingual Conjunto and more where the listener is always heard.

Many artists/musicians that are now making it always thank KEDA for giving them the opportunity to play their music when they were unknowns. Thats something that KEDA is known for - They make the hits, not PLAY the hits
