SXSW Nightly Updates

<><><><><>

3/17

The night starts with a great meal at Noodle-ism on 5th. If you dig healthy food, Japanese style, and are in Austin, check this place out.

<><><><><>

Next up is a trip to see Pluto. NO! Not the planet or the dog. PLUTO is a band that was part of a SPECIAL New Zealand showcase. This band rocks with a twist from down under. Flock(s) of Seagulls turned upside down! 5 Guys with a passion for FUN as well as MUSIC. If you can, take the trip.

<><><><><>

What a smorgasboard of musical morsals as I walk down East than West Sixth Street engulfed in a cacaphony of sounds.

<><><><><>

Momo's finally is located and I am treated to another surprise. A young lady (so far nameless) accompanied by a guitarist, numbs my ears with vocal gyrations and physical word play that could play well in any Las Vegas nightclub. From heartfelt originals to soul searching covers you need look no further. As soon as I can locate the young lady during SXSW I will post the info.

<><><><><>

And for a delectable desert, what better than gourging on the home grown Texas blues of Jesse "Guitar" Taylor at Pecan St. (Alley) Ale House.

<><><><><>

3/18

<><><><><>

And The Nameless Young Lady at Momo's' is Danielle Howe (see above). If you seek to be entertained and enlighten this fascinating performer will fill the bill.

<><><><><>

An extremely tasty musical morsel to begin the evening.
Susan Gibson claims that "there is still time" as she deftly creates a medley out of two yet to be released songs, titles unknown. There are no challenges here just "wide open spaces." If you have the opportunity to be at one of Gibsons performances you will understand.

<><><><><>

As a follow up to the delicate palate cleansing of Gibsons performance, it is off for the main course at Austin Music Hall. An appetizer of rock from Cake sets the tempo. When Little Richard takes the stage it is to a thundering roar of applause and cheers. This, being my first time seeing Little Richard live, was a thrill. At 70 years old "The Originator" of Rock N' Roll can still deliver the goods. Some words of advice to the two twenty-somethings that made the comment that the performance could have been better. Get your head out of your ass and to quote Little Richard "Shut-Up".

<><><><><>

A side trip sends me on a collision course with Athlete from the UK. Tasty stuff from those Brits.

<><><><><>

As the night of music draws to a close I learn a valuable lesson. Fire Kills! This Austin based HARD ROK band will burn you to a crisp. One word of caution. If you see the lead guitarist jump off stage give him plenty of room.

Panels or "What I 'learnd'" at SXSW04

<><><><><>

New Music is still new!

<><><><><>

What is Old is Old is also New.

<><><><><>

That Independent Record Stores are DEAD?!? <> ONLY if they want to be!

<><><><><>

That Little Richard is still Rockin' at 70!

<><><><><>

Am I preaching to the choir? Get Your ACT on the NET!!

<><><><><>

Big Champagne is not necessarily a double magnum of bubbly!

<><><><><>

Weed is something you want to use not smoke!

<><><><><>

What a night for Music in Austin!

<><><><><>

The Grim Northern Social is more than just another UK band. It is THE UK BAND. Socially infectious songs with anthemic chords. 'David Gray on Rock N' Roll Steroids'. Pink Floyd fronted by Freddie Mercury with a strong dose of Jagger. This band cannot only move your ass and feet but tug at your heart with original, AND I MEAN ORIGINAL, love songs like "Gasoline Queen". If you are in Austin for SXSW or any where on the third rock from the sun, do not overlook this band. (@ BD Riley's)

<><><><><>

After being tossed like a dried leaf in a maelstrom, a little bit of settle down was required. What better than to seek shelter at Pecan St. Ale House and the soothing harmonies of Canadas The Wailin' Jennys. The three part harmonies of these young singer/songwriters that could charm the rattlers off of a Texas diamond back!

<><><><><>

The Greenhorns (Cincinnati) were the hit of the night for Chris at Red Eyed Fly.

<><><><><>

The Secret Machines (New York) know how to play not only for but to their audience according to Chris. The Machines earned the respect and admiration of a dedicated Austinite.

<><><><><>

3/20

<><><><><>

Politically oriented panelist tend to be LONG WINDED!

<><><><><>

Ani DiFranco is One Righteous Babe!

<><><><><>

Joan Baez is as relevant today as she was 40 years ago!

<><><><><>

There is no handbook for publicity but there is a history of what works and what doesn't.

<><><><><>

A Pitchfork is not necessarily a garden tool.

<><><><><>

How many times does this have to be repeated? There is no such thing as BAD PUBLICITY!

<><><><><>

Keep your Roldex, PDA or cigar box up to date!

<><><><><>

The night starts with a Hush from Denmark at The Drink. This three person/two instrument outfit has the ability to capture even the most jaded music fan. The hauntingly familiar vocals accompanied by delicately played mandolin and acoustic guitar are sure to sooth the nerves of anyone.

<><><><><>

Set adrift on a discordant sea of sound, an old Oonies acquaintance appears as a one-man acoustic act at Camp Fig on Fifth. Jeffrey Cole presents songs off his recent CD "Tall Tales of the Twisted Yo~yo".

<><><><><>

Quiet reflection and introspection. A perfect start for what may turn into a tumultuous evening.

<><><><><>

As the street comes alive a comment is overheard "All I can hear is chigga, chigga, chigga. It all sounds different but it all sounds the same."

<><><><><>

In the space of one block (Neches to Trinity), the sound was so homogenized that it was almost impossible to determine from what club the sounds emanated.

<><><><><>

Moving west on 6th, Jenny Morgan, an emerging singer songwriter appears. A sweet and delicate voice accompanied by a slightly out of tune Takamine. The 3 song CD was worth the donation. Hopefully this slightly shy young lady will gain confidence as well as the larger audience she deserves. E-mail: jmorgan7@yahoo.com

<><><><><>

After presenting "true" story-songs to the crowd at Fox and Hounds, Michelle Shocked reveals that she has stopped drinking for the last two years. Even so that is not going to stop her from exhorting the crowd to partake of the evening beer specials which receives a roar of approval.
<><><><><>

Just as the night began with the reintroduction of old acquaintance so it ends. Roland played Oonies in a band called Envy. Now the former San Antonian has become an Austinite. Check out http://www.angel-salt.com for a new musical experience.

TIME: 3:53am. Good morning all and have a safe night.

<><><><><>

As a policy S.A.M.B.E. provides an open forum for all musicians, fans, promoters etc. I may support the concept of MP3 downloads but feel it is just as important to support copyright protections afforded recording artists. Piracy may not seem an important issue to the unknown artist trying to gain recognition but it does hamper sales of recorded product. Have a safe week.
