Music by Kevin Higgins, Barbara Malteze!

‘Taste of Texas’ - Thursday, Mar. 11
On Thursday March 11th we are having our first “Taste of Texas”. This month we will feature lamb chops from Loncito Cartwright, with Twin Oaks Ranch. Loncito will speak about his philosophy on sustainable, organic, local food. We will have a recipe to share and Loncito will have his wonderful lamb chops packaged and ready to take home so you can bring SOL food to your family. A small plate to tease & tantalize the taste buds! Specials on all, Texas wine & beer! Live music by Kevin Higgins, Barbara Malteze!

Watch Our Garden Grow
The first day of Spring is March 20th. We have been working hard over these winter months to get our raised planting beds in place and nutrient soil ready. Now we start planting. Come see, next to our playground, our progress. So far we have planted fresh herbs, carrots, arugula, beets, spinach, kale, and cabbage. It doesn’t get more fresh or local than that!

New Menu Item – “Vegan Club”
Our Vegan Club is made with grilled wheat roast, our own tofu bacon, organic spring mix, tomatos & our own chipotle vegan mayo. All masterfully combined on whole grain bread. Comes with a organic spring mix salad. It is dense with nutrition & low in fat.

“Get Your Green On”
We are encouraging all of our friends, family, and patrons to “get their green on”! This applies to many different areas. We are entering the beginning days of Spring, which officially starts March 20th. Trees are budding and plants and flowers are starting to return. All of us are appreciating the return of green in our landscape, and thinking of ways to add some more, such as gardening. Also March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Come in on that Wednesday wearing green and you’ll receive $1 off any of our Irish Beers. Then on March 28th our SOL Brunch will feature “Go Green” for our kids - activities encouraging ways to conserve, recycle, and be healthy. There will be lots to do and see this month at The Cove....so come on by!
Sincerely, clover leaf field, Lisa Asvestas

Kids Eat FREE!
Every Tuesday Night from 5:00pm-10:00pm bring the whole family, and Kids Eat Free, with the purchase of an Adult Meal. Offer Expires: March 31, 2010

From: Urban Campfires

Warning: You may not be able to get over the mesmerizing guitar chops of the talented Natalia Zukerman, but if you can , you will discover layers. Country roads that lead to red barns, antique shops, glass bottles, resonators, lap steels, finger picking and trembling slides. And, alongside these winding roads are back alleys, flagging cabs, and the buzz of a streetlight clicking with kick drums, pleading organs, and speeding electric guitars behind lyrics that delve boldly into work, love, temptation, and the journey to personal re-invention.

“Natalia’s voice could send an orchid into bloom while her guitar playing can open a beer bottle with its teeth.” -Andy Friedman, New Yorker Magazine

Natalia is cool... very cool.
She comes from a musical family and is the daughter of violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman and flutist/writer Eugenia Zukerman. Her sister Arianna is an opera singer and the gypsy blood in her veins came directly from her grandfather who played clarinet in klezmer bands in Poland and Israel. After receiving the requisite classical training Natalia realized early on that her first instrument, the violin, was not taking her where she really wanted to go. She turned her attention to the guitar -beginning with classical lessons - and began writing songs of her own songs after graduating from college. Her love for the guitar has led her to explore more varieties and offshoots of the instrument: electric, acoustic, slide, lap steel, even the banjo and a brief foray into traditional Indian technique. Reflecting on her varied musical roots, Natalia cites Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, Bonnie Raitt, Erika Luckett, Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, and Ani DiFranco among her influences. Her music is jazz, country, alt, blues, folk with with an edge. Her guitar playing while described as “fluid and smooth” is textured with swampy bottleneck slide, smooth jazz chords, open tunings and intricate picking. Her vocals are “slinky, earthy” and a “burnished croon” and her intensely personal lyrics are are often hailed for their imagery and intelligence.

As for her live shows... she’s sensational no matter where she is playing; a house concert, an audience of a few hundred or in front of thousands at gatherings like Telluride, The Rocky Mountain Folk Festival and the Ottawa Folk Fest. She has shared the stage and toured with roots greats and guitar slingers including Kelly Joe Phelps, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Garnet Rogers, Melissa Ferrick, Catie Curtis, Susan Werner and many others. It was on the road that Natalia formed the relationship with Willy Porter that lead to him producing her latest CD, Brand New Frame, and releasing it on his label Weasel Records. When she’s not playing music or running her own record label, Natalia can be found painting bigger-than-life murals commissioned for public or private spaces. Onstage, however, is where she is most at home and one thing’s for certain: this girl can play. We hope you’ll cook up a little something to share at the potluck, grab some friends and join us for an evening of bluesy, folk rock tunes and serious guitar chops. For more on Natalia Zukerman please vist her Web-site: http://www.nataliazukerman.com We have also updated the Urban Campfires My Space page to feature song samples and videos from Natalia. There is a short interview following the song, Brand New Frame, in the top video.

Pre-paid reservations for this show are $12. Please make your check payable to Natalia Zukerman and mail it to:
Urban Campfires PO Box 6474 San Antonio, Texas 78209

Please include your email address so we can send you a confirmation as soon as we receive your check.
If you find that you cannot attend the show we will gladly tear up your check if you notify us before Thursday, March 11.

Hope to see you at Natalia’s concert.
Janet, Steve & Jayne

We know many of you are Susan Gibson fans. Susan was in a car accident last weekend returning to Austin after playing with Elizabeth Wills at the Bugle Boy in La Grange. She broke her arm in 3 places and had surgery on her wrist. Like so many musicians, Susan is without medical insurance. If you would like to help her out during this tough time there is a link at the bottom of her home page for donations. We’ll let you know if we hear about any local benefit shows.

Urban Campfires is proud to be a Kerrville Folk Festival Partner, Celebrating Songwriters Together. 02/25/10

Here’s What’s Happening With GRAMMY U.
The Texas Chapter is excited to announce an amazing opportunity the program has offered this Spring. The Texas Chapter sponsors the Ray Benson stage at the Austin Airport during SXSW and we were able to offer GRAMMY U students the chance to play one of the two spots reserved just for our GRAMMY U artists on Monday, March 15th and Monday, March 21st. GRAMMY U students were asked to submit music and videos and from multiple submissions, the Texas Chapter Board narrowed it down to their top 4 picks. Since it’s the Ray Benson stage, we had Ray choose the top 2 for these slots during SXSW. Congratulations Chris Vinson and Automatic Cycle! Be sure to check them out! The Cactus Cafe in Austin – Shutting Down?
UT-Campus 2247 Guadalupe Street, 512-475-6515 (map)
From: Dropshot

I was made aware of the Universtiy of Texas trying to save money by shutting down the venerated sound room, The Cactus Cafe. Now, I am not a big fan of money wasting, but I don’t believe in sacrificing beneficial institutions either. The Cactus Cafe is National Centerpiece for Singer/Songwriters. It serves as a model for other institutions to copy. The Cactus is unique in this quality and is the product of the sweat and inspiration cellected and compiled from songwriers over the last 37 years. This collection of this experience is housed in this location and provides a social fabric not just for University, but for the whole city of Austin and beyond. Web-site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5DceRxEdDY Not too many places that you can have a civilized experience anymore that can give you a pssitive perspective. 0311/10

Bluegrass Update!
The two recent bluegrass concerts at Casbeers - the February 6, Rex Foster/Peter Rowan concert and the February 18, John Cowan Band concert - were both embarrassingly under-attended. I am frequently asked why there are so few festivals and bluegrass concerts in South Texas, and this is why. Casbeers brings in Peter Rowan, a former Blue Grass Boy and charter member of the highly influential bands Old and In the Way and Muleskinner and there were only 40 people in attendance. The great vocalist and bassist John Cowan formerly with the New Grass Revival showed up with a top-flight acoustic band and there were only 50 bluegrass music fans in attendance. Casbeers lost money. The bands will think twice about coming back. They will not be recommending San Antonio to their friends in the bluegrass community, so the touring bands won’t come any further south than Austin, as usual. And that is why there is so little bluegrass in South Texas. Thanks so much to the bluegrass music fans who attended and who support live bluegrass music. - Hank

Dave Schulz x 3 at SXSW!
From: Betsy Alexander
Award-winning keyboardist and singer/songwriter Dave Schulz is showcasing three different times in two days at this year’s SXSW Music Festival. Schulz, who has recorded and toured extensively with the Goo Goo Dolls, Berlin, English Beat/General Public, The Rembrandts, Fuel, Fastball and numerous other acts, will be playing songs from his debut CD, Connect. The project features Dave joined by special friends: Daniel Lanois, Bernard Fowler, Tony Levin, Mike Porcaro, Robin Dimaggio and Randy Cooke in addition to his band. Among the sophisticated pop/rock jewels are standouts “Everything,” “Stray” and “Perfect Day.” Connect also sports a very twisted - but compelling - cover of the Jimmy Buffet classic “Margaritaville.” Dave Schulz will be appearing Thursday, March 18, at 9:30pm and again on Friday, March 19, at 7:30pm at the Lucky Lounge. Cover is only $1.00 at one of Austin’s most convenient showplace locations. Earlier on Friday, March 19, Schultz and his band will be appearing around 2:00pm at the Official SXSW Music Stimulus Party 2010 at The Parish. The showcase runs noon through 5:00pm and features seven acts, a Mexican food buffet and an open bar with no cover charge. An RSVP by March 16 is required for this event.* *RSVP to: stimulus@luckmedia.com. For information, reviews, videos and downloads/purchases, visit Web-site: http://www.daveschulzmusic.com

Texas Music Awards™ Nominees Named!
Texas Music Awards™
Saturday, May 15th - Marshall Convention Center
2501 Southeast End Blvd. Marshall, Texas Ph: 903-935-4472 (map) 03/11/10
From: MyTexasMusic.com

Marshall – The Academy of Texas Music, Inc. has released the list of official nominees for the 8th annual Texas Music Awards™ to be held on Saturday, May 15th at the Marshall Convention Center in Marshall, Texas. The show will feature a concert by the host, legendary singer B.J. Thomas immediately following the presentations. Tommy Hooper, Vice President of the Academy of Texas Music, Inc. was given the distinct honor of offering the nominations to each of the musical category nominees. Hooper remarked, “It has been an exciting process to see folks in Marshall prepare for this event, and being able to personally offer each nominee their officially sanctioned nomination was quite an honor.” At least a dozen nominated artists will take the stage to perform for this prestigious event and awards will be handed out in fifteen categories to deserving Texas musicians and professionals.

The awards show, presented this year by Northeast Texas-based MyTexasMusic.com, the retail partner of the Texas Music Awards™ and the show’s production company, Payline Productions, will feature talent from several styles of music. The annual event also serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit Academy of Texas Music, Inc. which seeks sponsorships and donations to further its efforts toward music education programs, scholarships, recognition projects, and benevolence programs for musicians in need. Jinelle Boyd, Executive Director of the Academy of Texas Music, Inc. and Producer of the Texas Music Awards™ explains how important this process is to the nominees. “These outstanding artists need something to bring them recognition for their regional success and help them gain the national attention they deserve. Even though some of our nominees are already big stars in the music world, the Texas Music Awards™ serve to give many of the newer artists a stepping stone to bigger and better things.”

Nominees are scheduled to arrive via limousine to a red carpet affair starting at noon on May 15th. The show will begin at 2:00pm and the B.J. Thomas concert will begin around 6:00pm. Those who hold tickets to the awards show will be admitted to the concert at no charge. One recipient in each category will hold the award title for the next year based on a complex voting system. The voting process includes a ‘public involvement’ component, and interested fans are encouraged to visit the Texas Music Awards™ website to learn more about the voting process which is now open and continues through midnight on Friday, March 5th. Fans can listen to clips of music by all the nominees and can hear the five Song and five Record nominee tracks in their entirety prior to voting.

“The public vote is important,” says Boyd, “because it proves that the artists have a connection with their fans, but the bulk of the voting is done by the Academy Board of Honorees. This group of past award recipients cast 70% of the ballots which decide who gets the award in eleven of the fifteen categories. This year’s recipients will be added to the Board of Honorees. This is how we insure that the awards are more about the music and less of a simple popularity contest.” Boyd continues, “There is however, a popular element to the Texas Music Awards™. Four of the fifteen categories are decided by the public vote. The Live Band award and all the radio awards are decided in that fashion. These results will tell fans who really is leading the charge in Texas music.”

Sponsorships are still available for the 8th annual awards show and range from $100 to $50,000. Each level of sponsorship comes with a pre-determined number of tickets, so this is a sure way to get good seats. Tickets go on sale to the public in mid March, and a quick sell out is expected. Truly Inspiring Artistry – P!nk - GRAMMY Performance 01/31/10 10:46pm cst - 02/11/10 2:30am
While giving credit to the musical talent of most of the female performers at the 2010 GRAMMYs, it was more like burlesque until P!nk took the stage. Artistry is not just shaking your booty to the music or flashing a coy grin at the appropriate moment, it is taking the music, the words and the performance and melding them into one expression. P!nk succeeded in bringing more than T&A to the GRAMMYs. P!nk brought true artistry and a passion FOR the art. I can only hope she will inspire more artists, male and female, AND labels, to leave the ‘shock and awe’ to the military. Stop blaming the “fans” for the condition of the music industry. “A rotten apple will never be bought by a discerning buyer”. editor@ sambe.org 01/31/10 11:46pm cst

Cheap Trick To Headline BMI Auditorium Shores Stage At SXSW 2010
Friday, March 19 – FREE and open to the public
From: Kay Clary – BMI
Nashville – BMI will partner with SXSW to present Cheap Trick on Friday, March 19 at Auditorium Shores on Ladybird Lake in downtown Austin, Texas. FREE and open to the public, the show starts at 6:00pm, and will feature special guest the BoDeans.

Cheap Trick has offered a fervent mix of power pop and straight-up rock and roll for 35 years. From nostalgia-inducing jewels “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “The Flame,” to current fare like “Sick Man of Europe” and “Everybody Knows,” the band has remained as infectious as they are formidable. Tapped to color an impressive array of commercials and television theme songs for staples including That 70’s Show and The Colbert Report, they boast record sales of 20 million, contributions to 29 movie soundtracks, and 40 gold and platinum recording awards. Cheap Trick kicked off the summer of 2009 with a self-released new album, aptly titled ‘The Latest’. The original lineup remains intact: Robin Zander, lead vocals; Rick Nielsen, guitar; Tom Petersson, bass; and Bun E. Carlos on drums.

KEDA – 1540AM “Jalapeno Radio”
March 17, 2010 – 44th Anniversary
“The ‘experts’ said when we started on March 17th, 1966 this ‘cantina music playing radio station’ wouldn’t last 3 months”
– Richard Davila
09/08/05

KEDA 1540AM, Radio Jalapeno, as been listening to the community since 1966. On March 18, 2010, Radio Jalapeno will celebrate its 44th Anniversary. As a community oriented radio station, KEDA is an anomaly in the world of broadcasting, where growth is determined by the size of the merger. A local station in every sense of the word, KEDA listens to the listeners. No computer generated play list here. A singular feature of KEDA is the Jalapeno Jukebox which takes requests from 12:00noon till 1:00pm. More than once, listeners have requested a song in an attempted to stump the DJ, only to be surprised by the expanse of the record bin. Manual Gonzales Davila believed in the words that are on every FCC license where it says “in service to the community. His efforts, continued by his son Ricardo have made KEDA “Jalapeno Radio” a “parte de tu familia”, part of the family for generations of San Antonio families. Bilingual Conjunto and more where the listener is always heard.

KEDA – Radio Jalapeno
510 S. Flores San Antonio, Texas 78204
Ph: 210-226-5254 Fax: 210-227-7937

How does listening KEDA affect your life?

“It makes me think of my grandparents…” Mike M. <> “Chinga Chinga music that makes you want to dance.”…Joe V.
“It remind me of the times I spent with my dad.”…Elsa D.

Many artists/musicians that are now “making it” always thank KEDA for giving them the opportunity to play their music when they were “unknowns”. That’s something that KEDA is known for - “They make the hits, not PLAY the hits” …Chayo Z.
