Euro Update
From: Eddie Spaghetti
Achtung and gesundheit from glorious Germany! Yep, were back on the good ol Autobahn with JD at the wheel, tooling along at a cool 100mph, Q in the back seat perusing his latest German comic and me in the navigators seat making our way toward Cheeseburg (or Hamburg, I guess, as its actually known). We have quite the long haul to do today, so at the insistence of the misses, I am writing you all a little note to update you on our latest. Last night was spent in Stuttgart (Stuttfart) to a small but appreciative batch of shy Germans and I must say, Stuttfart is a cool town. We had a day off between our show Sunday night in Zurich and last nights show and after a nice leisurely afternoon spent in Zurich, where we tried to get our shop on but it was so damn expensive, we barely scratched the surface of what they had to offer, so we settled for some roamin round and had some great lunch and took some nice pictures like this one here of Q by the river. (I know, I should know the name of this river, but alas, I dont)
Then it was off to Stuttfart with us where we enjoyed our first day of not having to pack it up and leave right when we woke up which was a real treat after all the constant moving around weve been doing since we arrived. Quattro has been honing his photographers skills - he got a new digital camera before this trip and hes gotten quite good at capturing the odd little things that turn his crank. We spent the afternoon in the city center of Stuttfart where we treated ourselves to a nice Lunch/Dinner (or Linner) at an outdoor cafe and I enjoyed one of Germanys finest creations - the German beer. Yes, if the Germans have done anything right in their illustrious history, its the beer. Its pretty near perfect and its the one thing that is temperature appropriate. Meaning its actually cold. Whereas the milk, more often than not, is served barely below room temp and the coffee is often barely above. Anyway, heres to the German Brau!
As for Quattro, hes been having a good time with the Paceshifter boys (or Hot Cheese as we now call em. Dont ask why, we dont really know ourselves). Last night in Stuttfart he was backstage rockin Sebs gold top as Seb tried to help him learn My Sharona, which he has started to get a handle on. It sure makes this daddy proud!
Well, were finally pulling into Cheeseburg after a brief period of panic involving Geeps deciding not to work for about 50 miles, it looks like were going to get where were going after all. Which is good because Cheeseburg is a good rockin town and Id hate to miss it because of a faulty GPS system. So thats all I got for now. Once again, If youd like to keep updated in a more timely fashion check out my wifes blog at Web-site: http://europeforthree.blogspot.com/ - as shes been a blinding blur of bloggermania...
Cheers from Cheeseburg!

Installment #5: Always Be At Your Best Onstage
Eye on the Inside is a monthly column featuring segments from Festival Consultant Matthew Walts forthcoming industry resource, Reality Check: A Common Sense Guide to Breaking into the Music Business. Each installment will introduce simple concepts and suggestions intended to help aspiring artists and neophyte professionals increase their opportunity to find success doing what they love.
There is no acceptable excuse for a second rate performance. Not to the fan or the casual observer, nor the members of your band or the other acts on the bill, nor the promoter or anyone else who is invested in what you do. Of course there will be nights that are better than others, by virtue of one circumstance or another. But the simple fact is that to be the best one must perform their best, consistently. And in order to do that one must aspire to putting on the absolute best performance of their life, every time one takes to the stage, never once accepting anything less than everything theyve got.
Opines Chris Ross, bass player of the heatseeking Australia band Wolfmother, in a recent Boston Globe article, echoing the sentiments of innumerable greats that precede him, We put everything into our shows... You only get to do this once, so why not put everything into it and see what happens?
Neither sickness nor sadness nor whateverthehell is going on in your life nothing should keep a performer from delivering the goods. I dont care if there are 10 people or 10,000 people in the audience. When an artist takes to the stage: that is their moment to shine. And for a young artist that aspires to greatness (or even just to make a living), the time spent onstage should never be wasted under any circumstances.
Consider the stage an oasis an astonishingly beautiful place where others only dream they could be. Performing is what musicians get paid to do- even when it isnt very much. It is what their fans (or prospective fans) have come to see- no matter how few of them there are. And simply put: failure to pour ones heart and soul into every single note however many excuses for why that cannot possibly be is a determinant to ones craft and disrespect to ones audience.
Remember this, all you musicians that grow tired of playing to small crowds: fans love to be among the first to discover a great new band. True music lovers and show goers covet the opportunity to be there in the early days. They buy merchandise and talk about the band, start their own grassroots campaign boasting to friends and fellow music lovers online about their incredible find. The buzz that evolves simply through word of mouth about a band that puts their all into every single date is not to be undermined or overlooked. Thus, consistency is critical, as two of those ten people standing in the back of the room may very well have the capacity to jump start your career and you never know who those people may be or what could happen as a result of their enthusiastic response. In other words, half assed efforts produce half assed results, and an audience wont grow if their not buying what youre selling. But the bands that put everything into their performance are the ones that get the most out of it, and give themselves a chance.
To sweep ones fans off of their feet and transport them to another place to a place where the artist rules supreme (see: Bonos messianic complex), if only for a short time that is what every performer should aspire to. If it isnt, you probably dont belong there in the first place. The minds eye of the artist is where the audience wants to be its a peek into an artists heart and soul, and a fundamental reason why fans come to the show. Give them what they want. That is your job. Dont ever forget it, and please dont take it lightly. Anyone, in any vocation, who is given a platform on which to express themselves, should recognize the opportunity theyve been given and seize it with all their might. One hundred percent effort one hundred percent of the time, never forgetting how fortunate you are to get paid to do what millions of others do recreationally, simply for the love of music. 07/20/06
