The Cactus Cafe in Austin – Shutting Down?
UT-Campus 2247 Guadalupe Street, 512-475-6515 (map)
From: Dropshot

I was made aware of the Universtiy of Texas trying to save money by shutting down the venerated sound room, The Cactus Cafe. Now, I am not a big fan of money wasting, but I don’t believe in sacrificing beneficial institutions either. The Cactus Cafe is National Centerpiece for Singer/Songwriters. It serves as a model for other institutions to copy. The Cactus is unique in this quality and is the product of the sweat and inspiration cellected and compiled from songwriers over the last 37 years. This collection of this experience is housed in this location and provides a social fabric not just for University, but for the whole city of Austin and beyond. Woodstock Film Festival Newsletter Excerpts

SXSW Preview
The SXSW Film Conference and Festival kicks off March 12 with former Hudson Valley resident Janet Pierson in her second year at the helm. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she discussed her year-two approach to organizing the festival. Click here to read the interview. Several events with ties to the Hudson Valley and WFF are scheduled including the world premiere of Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm by Jacob Hatley. Woodstock Film Festival co-founder, director, programmer Laurent Rejto will be at SXSW looking for films and as Hudson Valley Film Commissioner, he will also be trying to convince filmmakers to shoot their next production in New York. Check out the WFF ad in the SXSW program.

Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm
In Ain’t In It For My Health Woodstock legend Levon Helm finds himself thrust into the musical spotlight for the first time in a quarter century, but a Grammy nomination and ever-growing audiences force him to confront the dark times that have haunted him since the demise of The Band: Throat cancer, bankruptcy, drug addiction and the tragic loss of bandmates Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. Win or lose, Levon is an artist who will not go quietly into the night.

Black Ops Arabesque
Director Jared Drake who brought Visioneers to WFF in 2008, is back with Black Ops Arabesque, the story of a secret service agent who’s life is as dull as the black and white suit he wears. As he follows orders to protect a little girl on her way to ballet class, a group of rogues move in and attempt to kidnap the girl. The agent and girl escape together on foot, only to be cornered and trapped by the rogues. Facing life and death, the agent learns that sometimes there’s nothing left to do but dance. (Courtesy SXSW)

Cold Weather
2006 Woodstock Film Festival Alum and NY resident, director and screenwriter Aaron Katz (Dance Party, USA) is back to premiere Cold Weather at SXSW. After making a mess of his life in Chicago, Doug, a former forensic science major and avid reader of detective fiction, returns to his hometown of Portland, Oregon where he, his sister Gail, and new friend Carlos become embroiled in a mystery. (Courtesy SXSW)

The Cow Who Wanted to Be a Burger
Woodstock Film Festival Animation Programmer Bill Plympton (Hot Dog, Santa the Fascist Years) is back with the hilariously tragic short story of a bovine who’s seduced by advertising and brought down the ominous path of butchers and carnivores. (Courtesy SXSW)

Cyrus
After receiving rave reviews at Sundance, The Duplass brothers are back with their singular knack: treating us to a tingling, irresistible experience of utter discomfort — suffused with pathos, romance, irony, and a little dollop of horror. This time they intrepidly mine Oedipal terrain to wrestle with stirring, profound questions about the obstacles to human intimacy. Alone and acutely depressed, having just learned of his ex-wife’s wedding plans, John (John C. Reilly) can’t believe his luck when he encounters beautiful, charming Molly (Marisa Tomei) at a party. The two get along famously and launch a passionate affair—until Molly’s 21-year-old son, Cyrus, (Jonah Hill) enters the scene. Will Molly and Cyrus’s deep and idiosyncratic bond leave room for John?

For Once In My Life
World Premiering at SXSW and directed by Jim Bigham and 2003 WFF Alum Mark Moormann (Tom Dowd and the Language of Music),For Once In My Life is the story of an inspiring group of people and their dream to make music. This documentary film follows the members of the Spirit of Goodwill Band while they prepare for the concert of a lifetime. As they navigate daily life, these twenty-eight musicians and singers, all with a wide range of severe mental and physical disabilities, display innate talent, humor and tenacity. For Once In My Life shatters preconceived notions of what it means to be “disabled” and reveals the humor, hope and the greatness within us all. (Courtesy SXSW)

The Freebie
Directed by and starring Katie Aselton, The Freebie is a romantic drama about a contented, yet sexually frustrated couples’ experiment to allow each other ‘one night off’. Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Aselton) have an enviable relationship built on love, trust and communication - they still enjoy each other’s company and laugh at each other’s jokes, but, unfortunately, they can’t remember the last time they had sex. When a dinner party conversation leads to an honest discussion about the state of their love life they begin to flirt with a way to spice things up. The deal: one night of freedom, no strings attached, no questions asked. (Courtesy SXSW)

How to Fold A Flag
From part time Hudson Valley residents Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein comes How to Fold a Flag, a documentary about virtue, liberty, unity, justice, perseverance, hardiness, valor, purity, innocence, sacrifice, honor, independence and truth. Each is represented by a fold in the American flag at a memorial service. These are the things soldiers are said to fight for. Then they come home.

Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee
Director, Screenwriter and 2005 Woodstock Film Festival Alum, Shane Meadows (Dead Man’s Shoes) has created an unpredictable, lovable film. With its North American Premiere at this year’s SXSW Festival, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee is an irrepressible ode to spontaneous filmmaking where Paddy Considine stars as rock roadie and failed musician, Le Donk. Along the way he’s lost a girlfriend but he has found a new sidekick in up-and-coming rap prodigy Scor-zay-zee. With Shane Meadows’ fly-on-the-wall crew in tow, Donk sets out to make Scor-zay-zee a star...with a little help from the Arctic Monkeys.

Leaves of Grass
Written, directed and starring WFF alum Tim Blake Nelson, Leaves of Grass features performances by Edward Norton, Keri Russell and Richard Dreyfuss. With its U.S. Premiere at SXSW, the film is the story of Bill Kincaid, who receives news his estranged twin brother, Brady (both played by Edward Norton), has been murdered, he travels back home to Oklahoma to find that his brother’s death is greatly exaggerated, and he’s soon caught up in the dangerous, unpredictable drug world of the Oklahoma back waters. In the process, he reconnects with his eccentric mother (Susan Sarandon), meets a wise and educated woman who bypassed academia for a simpler life (Keri Russell), and helps his brother settle a score with a pernicious drug lord (Richard Dreyfuss) who uses Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Jewish community for a cover. Leaves of Grass follows a twisting path merging crime drama and drug comedy in pursuit of answering one of our oldest questions: What does it truly mean to be happy? (Courtesy SWSW)

One Square Mile of Earth
Director Jeff Drew, a 2001 WFF Alumni (Walk) has brought to the world another fabulous animated short: One Square Mile of Earth. A series of bar room conversations features Bill the Bunny, Gary the Frog, Lucy the Goat, Thad the Bear, Leon the Hippopotamus and Pedro the Squirrel. Fun times await! (Courtesy SXSW)

Silver Sling
From Tze Chun, the writer/director who brought Children of Invention to the 2009 Woodstock Film Festival, comes Silver Sling. In the polarized economy of the near future, corporations offer subsidies to their high-ranking female employees to pay for surrogate pregnancies and chemically accelerated births. Here a struggling career surrogate must decide whether or not to carry the child of two potential clients, thus giving up her last chance to have a child of her own. (Courtesy SXSW)

Winter’s Bone
Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone follows an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl who hacks her way through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. The cast features Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Kevin Breznahan. Winter’s Bone is the much awaited follow up to Down to the Bone, which was filmed in the Hudson Valley and starred Oscar® Nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air). Down to the Bone won major awards including the Maverick Award for best feature film at WFF 2004). Cinematographer Michael McDonough, who recently filmed Bitter Feast in Olivebridge, lensed both features.

5 variations on a long string
Peter Esmonde (Trimpin: The Sound of Invention) brings us his next musical gem. 5 variations on a long string is a short music documentary about the creative life of composer/performer Ellen Fullman, who has spent over 25 years developing, perfecting, and performing on an extraordinary 60-foot-long instrument. Recorded in multi-channel surround sound, this short film is an intense exploration of Fullman’s creative process and the mind-blowing sound world she has created.

Oddessey
Genuine, humble, authentic, or just simply the term 100 are all words that could be used to describe the unique southern gangsta rap stylings of Off tha Chain’s headlining artist Robyn Lexristopher Williams, better known among his fans as Oddessey. Oddessey was born in Birmingham, Alabamba on December 27, 1981, but spent a large majority of his childhood growing up in Chicago, Illinois. For Oddessy, music was always a way of entertaining and expressing himself, even more so because of his reltionship with his grandfather who owned as well as DJ’d a club in Chicago. He was raised in a single-parent home by his mother Rosalyn Williams, and as a lot of black men in urban setting turned to the streets in order to fulfill his monetary and social needs. Since returning to Birmingham, Oddessey has seen a lot and has adjusted his northern style of hustle and flow to Alabama’s more slow paced rugged type environment and is all geared up to release his long awaited project ‘Determination of a Rider’ on July 27, 2008. With hits like “100” “D-boy on” and “So Cold” it is highly anticipated and expected to be some of the hottest shit to hit the streets since the hottest shit on the streets. Oddessey genuinely feels that his path is that of the o-g’s & gangsta’s, and is driven by money and weed. When questioned about his feelings on his project he responded simply “Da shit on smash, when dey here it dey gone know.”

Cross Canadian Ragweed and Reckless Kelly
From: Essential Broadcast Media
Nashville – They are two of the hottest and most nationally recognized Texas touring bands in the country. Separately, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Reckless Kelly have long led the Red Dirt Revolution and, after partnering for charitable events and awards shows in years past, the two bands will finally join together for a truly Ragged and Reckless tour beginning March 3 in Nashville, Tennessee. “I’ll probably come back with a couple of good stories from [that run], I imagine,” laughs Willy Braun of Reckless Kelly. “It’s been a while since we’ve done a full-on tour with those guys, so that will be pretty fun.” The decision to tour together arose after both bands returned from the sold-out 2010 MusicFest in Steamboat Springs where they shared the stage with Robert Earl Keen, Lee Ann Womack, Chris Knight, Dean Dillon and more. However, the relationship between the two bands extends to early days when they had similar performance circuits, including Lucy’s in Austin, Texas—where both bands now call home. “We’ve toured with a ton of bands,” remarks Cross Canadian Ragweed’s Cody Canada. “The two that we would tour non-stop with year round is Robert Earl Keen and Reckless Kelly. We first saw Reckless Kelly in 1998 in Dallas and our jaws dropped, and we said that’s who we need to jam with. After a couple of years of chasing those guys we finally got to be friends with them. There’s not a harder working band of brothers than our two bands and we wear that like a badge of honor. We look forward to this run and the rehab that follows.”

Cross Canadian Ragweed recently celebrated their 15th anniversary and over 1 million albums sold, including their recent release ‘Happiness and All the Other Things’ that hit shelves last August and marked their 10th album release. USA Today recently named them “one of the better-kept secrets around,” and went on to say, “as usual, their best stuff is so good you wonder why more people aren’t noticing.” With singles such as “Fightin’ For” entering Top 40 on the country charts, Ragweed is known for sell-out shows across the country.

Reckless Kelly is currently celebrating their seventh studio release this week with ‘Somewhere in Time’—a record that pays homage to legendary singer/songwriter Pinto Bennett and has Associated Press raving, “[the music] is fun, poignant, authentic and completely deserving of this tribute.” While earlier this year Reckless was nominated for Duo/Group of the Year during the Americana Music Awards, the band is now celebrating the Top 10 debut of ‘Somewhere in Time’ on the Americana Music Association radio charts.

Together, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Reckless Kelly offer a unique concert experience that promises to be leave fans both ragged and reckless. From: Krista Mettler / Skye Media & Design
New Single To Hit Radio In March
Sister Hazel, the five-piece rock band from Gainesville, Florida, has announced its fifth Annual Hazelnut Hang at The Windjammer in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, for June 4 ~ June 6, 2010. The Hazelnut Hang, which the band created as a way to interact more closely with their fans, is a weekend gathering of fans, friends, and the band members to share music, food, and fun, with plenty of time to hang out together. There will be two ticket packages available to Hang attendees, each offering fans different goodies. All details are available at Web-site: http://www.rockridgemusic.com/hazelnuthang, as are lists from the band about why they love hosting the Hang and photos of past gatherings. Tickets on sale February 18th at Web-site: http://www.the-windjammer.com.

Just in time to chase away the winter blues, Sister Hazel will be releasing its next single, “Vacation Rain,” in March at Hot AC and AAA radio. The song comes from the band’s latest album, ‘Release’, which debuted at #37 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in August 2009. Additionally, in support of ‘Release’, Sister Hazel continues on the road, including a Midwest run (see full tour schedule below). The band would like to encourage fans to visit Sister Hazel’s iLike page Web-site: http://www.ilike.com/artist/Sister+Hazel to dedicate the song “This Kind Of Love” for Valentine’s Day to show a loved one or their big crush that they care. The song has become a wedding proposal and reception first dance staple since it came out on the album ‘Absolutely’ in 2006.

In early 2010, Sister Hazel hosted the 10th annual Rock Boat cruise aboard the Carnival Inspiration, which hit the high seas January 7 – 11, 2010. The boat sailed from Tampa to Cozumel, Mexico. One of the highlights of this year’s cruise was the fan-favorite Deep Cuts set by Sister Hazel, which included songs that had either never been performed live or had not been performed live in over 10 years. The band’s Web-site: http://www.sisterhazel.com includes video clips from the set. Sister Hazel co-founded the Rock Boat cruise with Sixthman in 2001. Music fans who aren’t already following Sister Hazel on Twitter should do so: they have over 770,000 followers Twitter: @sisterhazelband, and all five band members actively update the feed daily with information about upcoming shows and appearances, musings about life on the road, details about their personal lives and families, and the things they like to do when they aren’t on stage.

MTEC, The Music Industry’s First Virtual Reality School for Musicians and Recording Artists
From: Beatwire.com
New York, NY – Enrollment is open at Music Talks Educational Center (MTEC), the music industry’s first “virtual world” learning institution for musicians, songwriters, producers, recording engineers and studio owners. Classes focusing on musicianship, professional and personal development begin Monday, January 18, 2010. Going beyond the ivy walls of traditional education, MTEC provides online access to a world of virtual classes, educators, music industry professionals and opportunities geared for busy and traveling recording artists. The MTEC community includes artists and industry professionals from around the world, providing rich audio, video and music industry focused content powered by an interactive experience unique to this virtual environment.

MTEC was born out of Music Talks Sessions, live speaking events held in New York and Los Angeles by MTEC creator and director, David C. Knight. A composer and producer himself, Knight seized the opportunity to expand his in-person events and make them available globally. “As Music Talks Sessions grew, I had to find a way to reach recording artists everywhere, regardless of their location. MTEC’s virtual world allows me and other professionals to deliver relevant, educational and informative content to artists no matter where they are, and allows them to connect and learn from one another, as well,” says Knight. The curriculum is centered on three core areas: artist development, entrepreneurship and personal development. Courses for the first semester include: Lyric Lab, taught by Rob Meurer; Microphone Technique, taught by John Durbin; Critical Listening, taught by Drew Daniels; Music Publicity, taught by Nikki O’Neill; and Business Management for the Creative Mind, taught by Debra Russell, among others.

The centerpiece of the MTEC campus is a virtual glass building comprised of five classrooms, a conference room an amphitheater, recording studio, multimedia library, a cafe bookstore, an art gallery and a student teacher lounge. The classrooms are named after legendary recording artists ranging from John Lennon to RUN-DMC. Each classroom is equipped with voice chat (VOIP), video screens and streaming video for special events. Music Talks Educational Center is surrounded by 360,000 square meters of virtual land that also features two dormitories, an outdoor concert stage and a music store in which student and professional artists can sell their music.

MTEC offers artist residents the opportunity to learn from world class industry professionals and fellow recording artists; lease promotional dorm rooms to showcase their music and host music video and CD release parties; connect with their fans and build personal communities; and even send and receive virtual telegrams, all within a virtual campus. MTEC is a unique online experience for recording artists and music industry professionals. In just a few minutes, one can take video tour of the MTEC campus, register to become an artist resident and explore the ultimate in education and experience for budding and professional recording artists. The Woodstock Film Festival is a not-for-profit, 501 (C) (3) organization with a mission to present an annual program and year-round schedule of film, music, and art-related activities that promote artists, culture, inspired learning, and diversity.

The Hudson Valley Film Commission promotes sustainable economic development by attracting and supporting film, video and media production

The Hudson Valley Programmer’s Group is dedicated to creating, curating and administering a touring road show program that brings internationally renowned filmmakers and artists to the region

Dear Friends, We’d like to wish you a very happy & healthy New Year. As 2009 comes to a close, we also want to remind you that there’s still time to make a tax-deductible donation to the Woodstock Film Festival, or please consider buying a raffle ticket to support our goals and to have a chance at winning a wonderful Ski and Stay Getaway. We recognize that without you, the Woodstock Film Festival can not continue presenting its annual fall program and year-round schedule of film, music and art-related activities. Like many other fiscally responsible not-for-profit organizations, we have felt the sizeable impact of government cutbacks, the evaporation of grants and corporate downsizing. As a result we are doubling our fundraising efforts to fill the gaps in our budget.

The 10th Annual Woodstock Film Festival has come and gone. By many accounts it was our biggest success yet!
We presented over 150 events and saw tremendous participation from filmmakers, industry members and filmgoers. Films included Up in the Air, The Messenger, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Me and Orson Welles, Garbage Dreams, Junior, October Country, to name a few. Festival guests included emerging filmmakers and A-list talent including Steve Buscemi, Jonathan Demme, Vera Farmiga, Giancarlo Esposito, Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Ethan Hawke, Ted Hope, Barbara Kopple, Richard Linklater, Lucy Liu, Uma Thurman and many others. Your support is needed so we can continue to present world-class films, music and art-related activities that promote artists, culture, inspired learning and diversity.

Our global and community-minded programs need your help too!
* Exposure: By hosting Exposure in a setting that has a longstanding tradition for social consciousness, the Woodstock Film Festival creates a natural progression by which programming can focus on matters that affect our lives and our world while seeking to heighten awareness and to stimulate dialogue and positive resolution.
* Focus On Music: With musical heritage as its ancestry, WFF has made music an integral part of its programming, showcasing films about music and musicians while actively exploring its role in film.
* Youth Iniative: With youth-at-risk workshops, Career Day and Youth Screenings, WFF aims to give youth the confidence to learn about film, speak with industry leaders and follow their dreams.

Academy-Award nominated actor David Strathairn once said of the Woodstock Film Festival that “The idea here is to get together with the community. It’s like being in a friend’s kitchen. If it’s not, Woodstock should be on the National Register for real Americana towns.”

Here are a few 2009 anecdotes that illustrate how participants and the community interact in a friendly, casual environment that is conducive to creativity, networking and a good time.
* The cast of the The Messenger including Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster and Steve Buscemi dined at The Garden Cafe. After hours of chatting with locals, they moved on to the Opening Night Party at New World Home Cooking where they mingled with partygoers long into the night.
* Lucy Liu who attended with her film RED LIGHT went shopping around town and stopped in at Family of Woodstock when a local teenager suggested she could find clothing there.
* World-renowned documentary filmmaker Ron Mann U.S. Premiered his film Flak and took advantage of his stay to attend Sound Energy Therapy at Sage Center for the Healing Arts before inviting local friends for breakfast at Cucina.
* A private party for the film Without a Home provided a scrumptious ‘Midnight Breakfast Under the Moon’ complete with valet parking on a rural country lane
* The California based crew of Dear Lemon Lima screened their ‘audience award winning’ film at Onteora High School before joining other filmmakers including Oscar winners Barbara Kopple and Leon Gast for the Youth Initiative Career Day.
* Toronto based filmmaker Tony Coleman world premiered Mighty Uke, and invited featured musicians to perform at a Mighty Uke Concert to benefit the Killian Mansfield Foundation. Killian, a local sixteen year old ukelele prodigy saw Tony’s film two days before passing away on August 20, 2009 from an advanced and rare form of cancer.
* Veteran members of the two titans of the blues; Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, performed at the Perfect Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert. Featured musicians included Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Sugar Blue and Bob Stroger.

“The Woodstock Film festival is among the finest of a dying breed: a festival that isn’t trying to sell you anything, but simply and beautifully celebrating the art & craft of filmmaking,” wrote Ethan Hawke.

Another key focus in 2010 will be to expand Year Round Programming. With your help, WFF year-round events and the Hudson Valley Programmer’s Group (HVPG) events will continue in many NY counties including Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Albany and New York. 2009 special presentations included The Cake Eaters with Mary Stuart Masterson, The Bill Plympton College Tour, the Oscar® winning Man on Wire with Philippe Petit and Taking Woodstock with Michael Lang, Ang Lee and James Schamus. Your support will allow the film festival and HVPG to continue presenting world-class events throughout the year.

Throughout 2009, the Hudson Valley Film Commission (HVFC) continued to attract and support film, video and media production in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. Five feature films were in production in September and October throughout the region. The result was jobs and economic development. Film production brings billions of dollars to the NYS economy and HVFC works diligently to bring those dollars to the Hudson Valley. Recent productions include The Cake Eaters with Kristen Stewart, Splinterheads, Taking Woodstock, Rocksteady, Stake Land, Whisper Me a Lullaby. Your support will help the film commission continue providing free resources for local filmmakers and support to independent & studio features, short films, student projects, TV ads and regional filmmakers.

Please consider supporting our continued efforts with a tax-deductible contribution. Every dollar you contribute can be allotted to support any of the above mentioned goals. Just let us know which program you wish to support or simply contribute to general operating costs. We have, and will continue to be frugal and responsible. Contribute to the Woodstock Film Festival online or send a check made payable to:

Thank you for your generosity and support;

Popkomm 8th – 10th September 2010
Newsletter December 2009
Dear Pop(komm)friends, It’s coming home, it’s coming, Popkomm’s coming home! We’ve analysed, listened, discussed, consulted and are certain! After a year’s wait Popkomm 2010 will be taking off again and what better place to do this than at Berlin’s Tempelhof airport. Now decommissioned, the world famous airport will play host to Popkomm from 8th to 10th September 2010. We’re really looking forward to seeing you again, listening to your opinions, ideas and suggestions. Besides that we’re also looking forward to some great music. Before all that happens though the Popkomm Team wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year! With all that in mind here is the latest news and information about Popkomm 2010 hot off the presses just for you, so read on dear reader as the beat goes on…

Key Facts: Popkomm 8th - 10th September 2010 in Berlin
The Location: The now decommissioned airport Berlin Tempelhof. When built in 1923 it was the world’s largest integrated building complex (and still 3rd after Peking Airport and the Pentagon). In 1948/49 it was Berlin’s main airport and the central landing point for the Berlin Airlift bringing in supplies for Berliners during the Berlin Blockade. After this it was used by the US military and in 1985 re-opened for public usage until it was decommissioned in 2008. Since its closure it has become a much sought after event location both inside the building and outside. Popkomm 2010 will take place in the impressive main entrance hall and former departure gates.

The Conference: Popkomm is future oriented and asks the most important and contemporary music business questions. Experience top class keynotes and far-reaching panels where quality and topical discussions focus on themes that directly affect the business.

The Festival: Popkomm is music and artist oriented and offers a limited amount of showcase slot. A panel of trustees decide who get the chance and music genres are limited. The Popkomm Festival Center is once again located at Berlins Kulturbrauerei with its many locations. The festival takes place from 8th – 10th September 2010.

The Berlin Festival Special: The Berlin Festival takes place directly after Popkomm (10th – 11th September 2010). Popkomm is cooperating with this urban festival which takes place in the heart of the city. This year the Berlin Festival had over 14.000 visitors to see acts such as Pete Doherty, Jarvis Cocker, Digitalism, Peaches, The Thermals and Zoot Woman performing in the decommissioned hangars and landing strip of the former airport Berlin Tempelhof.

The Berlin Music Week: The City of Berlin presents a wide-range of music from 6th – 12th September 2010. Under the umbrella brand “Berlin Music Week” all facets of Berlin’s music culture and industry can be seen and heard by trade visitors and the general public from home and abroad. Popkomm and the Berlin Festival are two of the event’s main pillars.

It is also possible to book showcase slots outside of Popkomm within the framework of the “Berlin Music Week”.

See and hear you in 2010! 12/31/09

‘KD “Katherine Dawn” 25 In TX’
OK! Here we go. S.A.M.B.E. does not, with the emphasis on ‘not’, review submitted music.
But for every “not” there has to be a “yes” at some point. That point has been reached.
It was 10:00am on Sunday, Sept. 20, the boom box spinning Side A of the two disc offering of Katherine Dawns independent release ‘KD “Katherine Dawn” 25 In TX’ on His Hill Records. After a hard to listen to introduction from Bill Lister recorded in 1978, the clickity clack of the up-hill climb, Side A starts you on a roller coaster ride of sonic treats and songs that do not stop. “Wow! I am down to track 6 and freaking out. I don’t remember hearing this side of KD before. If this is a preview of the rest of the two disc release ‘Katherine Dawn ~25 In TX~’ it is going to be one wild ride.”

A track by track critique of ‘25 In TX’, that is 25 tracks, is not the intention of this review. Are there some ‘less than memorable tracks’ on the release? Absolutely! But then, they all can be counted on one hand! Not a bad ratio when you consider most ‘commercial stuff’ has maybe one or two tracks out of twelve. You know, the stuff used to fill a disc that otherwise would never see the glare of the laser in a CD player.

‘25 In TX’ does not contain ‘any filler’. Each track has the potential to touch someone. Some of the tracks that stick with me are: “It Doesn’t Matter to Me” recorded in 1983, “Hairdresser Blues” recorded in 1993, “Hotel Flyer” - 1994, “Sister Memphis” - 2001, “Time is Now” - 2002, “Old #9” - 2001, “Red Bird” - not dated. It would have been easier to list all the tracks on both discs but that would take away the mystery and surprises that ‘25 In TX’ holds for every listener of rock, folk/americana, blues and beyond. All of the tracks were extracted from the original masters with no over-dubs or fixes. Lets just say you will be listening to the evolution of an artist from day one and anticipating the next ride on the KD express.

If you have the opportunity to catch KD live ‘somewhere in Texas’, then you want to get this offering at the gig. Each performance is considered a CD-release. If you are on some other part of the planet or ‘in orbit’ (hello to NASA), visit Web-site Katherine Dawn. 09/20/09 12:00pm 09/24/09

NEMO Newsletter
From: NEMO Music Festival
Installment #5: Always Be At Your Best Onstage
Eye on the Inside is a monthly column featuring segments from Festival Consultant Matthew Walt’s forthcoming industry resource, “Reality Check: A Common Sense Guide to Breaking into the Music Business.” Each installment will introduce simple concepts and suggestions intended to help aspiring artists and neophyte professionals increase their opportunity to find success doing what they love.

There is no acceptable excuse for a second rate performance. Not to the fan or the casual observer, nor the members of your band or the other acts on the bill, nor the promoter or anyone else who is invested in what you do. Of course there will be nights that are better than others, by virtue of one circumstance or another. But the simple fact is that to be the best one must perform their best, consistently. And in order to do that one must aspire to putting on the absolute best performance of their life, every time one takes to the stage, never once accepting anything less than everything they’ve got.

Opines Chris Ross, bass player of the heatseeking Australia band Wolfmother, in a recent Boston Globe article, echoing the sentiments of innumerable greats that precede him, “We put everything into our shows... You only get to do this once, so why not put everything into it and see what happens?”

Neither sickness nor sadness nor whateverthehell is going on in your life – nothing should keep a performer from delivering the goods. I don’t care if there are 10 people or 10,000 people in the audience. When an artist takes to the stage: that is their moment to shine. And for a young artist that aspires to greatness (or even just to make a living), the time spent onstage should never be wasted under any circumstances.

Consider the stage an oasis – an astonishingly beautiful place where others only dream they could be. Performing is what musicians get paid to do- even when it isn’t very much. It is what their fans (or prospective fans) have come to see- no matter how few of them there are. And simply put: failure to pour ones heart and soul into every single note – however many excuses for why that cannot possibly be – is a determinant to ones craft and disrespect to ones audience.

Remember this, all you musicians that grow tired of playing to small crowds: fans love to be among the first to discover a great new band. True music lovers and show goers covet the opportunity to be there in the early days. They buy merchandise and talk about the band, start their own grassroots campaign boasting to friends and fellow music lovers online about their incredible find. The buzz that evolves simply through word of mouth about a band that puts their all into every single date is not to be undermined or overlooked. Thus, consistency is critical, as two of those ten people standing in the back of the room may very well have the capacity to jump start your career and you never know who those people may be or what could happen as a result of their enthusiastic response. In other words, half assed efforts produce half assed results, and an audience won’t grow if their not buying what you’re selling. But the bands that put everything into their performance are the ones that get the most out of it, and give themselves a chance.

To sweep one’s fans off of their feet and transport them to another place – to a place where the artist rules supreme (see: Bono’s messianic complex), if only for a short time – that is what every performer should aspire to. If it isn’t, you probably don’t belong there in the first place. The minds eye of the artist is where the audience wants to be – it’s a peek into an artist’s heart and soul, and a fundamental reason why fans come to the show. Give them what they want. That is your job. Don’t ever forget it, and please don’t take it lightly. Anyone, in any vocation, who is given a platform on which to express themselves, should recognize the opportunity they’ve been given and seize it with all their might. One hundred percent effort one hundred percent of the time, never forgetting how fortunate you are to get paid to do what millions of others do recreationally, simply for the love of music.
